Open Office 2.3 released
There are a number of important new features for users in this release. The presentations application, Impress, now supports multiple monitors, with the presenter choosing where to display the presentation. The Calc spreadsheet has an improved HTML export capability, using styles to better recreate in a browser the appearance of the original spreadsheet. The database application, Base, has a number of enhancements, including improved support for Microsoft's Access product.

It's a little-known secret, but what you see in the interface of version 2.0 of OpenOffice.org isn't what you have to settle for. Hidden throughout version 2.0 are dozens of pieces of functionality.

OpenOffice.org Beta
Currently at milestone 122, the Beta version is quite good, it is now stable and compatible with MS documents. Download the windows version from a South African mirror here.
We expect the final release to occur around November.

LinuxWorld South Africa
This year saw the first ever LinuxWorld event in South Africa. This was an important event signifying that Open Source is a real payer for business. LinuxWorld took up half a hall at the Sandton Convention Centre at FutureX, next year, it will probably double that to an entire hall. Many venders showcased their Linux wares, such as Intoweb Training, Novell, Impi, In words, Linux Warehouse, LPI, Obsidian, Red Hat, Shuttleworth Foundation, and Tangent Systems.
